Further up the hill, we found a watchtower with what we assumed to be an official cameraman mounted upon it, filming the action below. Either that, or he was the most technologically sophisticated stalker we'd ever seen.

You can see some of the crowd lined up along the side of the road here. This was pretty much what it looked like all up and down the hill, in varying degrees of crowd thickness, and with varying degrees of spectator thickness as well (although the further up the hill we proceeded, the thinner those spectators generally got).

Monte Carlo is mainly built up on the hills and outcroppings surrounding a couple of big bays on the Mediterranean. As we ascended, we got better and better views of the city spread out around us. This huge marina in one bay was encircled, or perhaps ensemicircled, by the racetrack. There were some very large yachts anchored in the middle and they made the crowd in the stands appear miniscule in the background.

Of course, when you zoomed in, you could see just how tiny the audience in the stands really was. Also, sparse. Apparently, most of the real crowd was standing on the hill around us.

Additionally, you could see quite well just how much the race was sponsored by French and American cigarette companies, and Australian beer - Australian beer that I have on good authority from some New Zealanders we'd met on our last trip to Europe is of a quality akin to, and I quote, "pisswohtah." I also have it on good authority from Roger that, "hey, it's still beer."
